Why I prefer staying late at work!

An argument supporting the cause of techies

Alright… Letz talk !

-Does the company give me free food if I stay late?

-Do they pay extra for the extra time spent at work?

-Does the cute gal in next bay stay late at work?

Ok bad guesses, here is what I have to say. I might make quite a few enemies after some of you read what is written below. A small disclaimer – these are totally my views and the group might not subscribe to the views below.

I started of as a normal guy, minding my own business letting my family folks watch their late night soaps or what we call as mega serials after a hard days work.

Since my work normally keeps me in office at those times I was not really bothered about them spending so much time on these soaps.

There came a time when my client manager Uri from Boston got a sudden enlightenment that we were burning out a lot at work and decided we need rejuvenation. He started chasing us early from work and gave dire warnings to those who stayed after 7.30, the warnings ranged from low score in appraisals to him pronouncing our Indian names in his accent during teleconferences. This created panic amidst the Anantharamans[Pronounced as Another-man by Uri] and Parthasarathys [Paratha-share-a-tea again by youknowwho] in our team. Hence we unanimously decided to obey him.

Life was back to routine – eating dinner with family, amidst angry scenes, tears, laughter and what not, err not in my family but the evening soaps which we had for company.

Ok fine I’m a considerate man; I understand the folks at home need some sort of entertainment as they are at home all day long.

What really puts me off was these particular episodes !

Scene – 1

It was the 2nd day of a week and we were having dinner together and a mega-serial was going on in the TV and the protagonist [the heroine of course] who was portrayed as Bharathiyar’s pudhumai penn [wah our serial directors need to be lauded] was taking revenge on her husband who happens to be villain of the soap. It seems he had married the heroine for her ancestral property and had cheated her and changed the property in his name.

After hundreds of episodes of crying and torturing us she finally gets the courage and threatens the guy and his family and gives them 2 weeks time to change the property back to her name.

Having heard the story from the folks I was quite a fan of the director and lauded the heroine who was fighting against the villainous family and that too all alone by herself.

mmmm…. I thought after all these mega serials have some social message in them.

Scene -2 [two weeks later]

One of those days when my boss again drove us home, we again had a family reunion at the dining table. The same serial was going on and I was expecting the heroine to have got back the property in her name and to my shock instead I see the heroine standing near her husband’s bed crying uncontrollably and trying to control her sleep. I was really shocked and asked my folks for what had happened to the courageous pudhumai penn!!

What I heard from them, really made my blood boil – here it goes – The week where she was supposed to get back the property, it seems the heroine’s dead mother came in her dreams and had advised her to give up the fight against her husband and instead serve her villainous husband as a dutiful wife. And as a mark of respect to her dead mother she comes back to her husband’s place and surrenders to her husband as a dutiful wife to him.

The husband to test his duty bound wife had asked her to stand the whole night by the bed without sleeping!!!! @#$#@$#@$#@

I totally lost it. My family of 4 [excluding me] were watching this so called gripping serial  @#$@#$@#$. I just blasted them for wasting their time on the stoopid serials and went to the safe abode – my room and away from all these madness.

I begged and requested my American manager to give me work that would keep me occupied till 10pm, so that I come home after most of the ‘gripping’ soaps are over and my merciful manager agreed :)

I rest my case and am at peace now!

Adios !
